Techblogger article on electronic money in this month’s edition of The Journal

Have you seen the weirdly unconvincing Usain Bolt London Olympics advert , in which the fastest man to have ever walked on the planet appears to jog through treacle, to the deeply irrelevant accompaniment of  Ocean Colour Scene?
Well, in an “online exclusive” for the Law Society of Scotland’s Journal, I have written about the new law behind the new technology which the rubbish advert is trying to sell you.
My article discusses the EU’s Green paper Towards an integrated European market for card, internet and mobile payments, and also adds an overview of the current e-money regime.
Essentially the Green Paper has invited comment on a wide array of potentially relevant means of regulation, which is a reflection of the novelty of policy in this area.

And for an 80-seat restaurant, that, on a Friday or Saturday night, will send out about 600 plates of food, knowing what’s around the corner will prevent the couscous from hitting the fan." [4]
  • Way it Was talks about an aspect of Newport and how it was in the past.[3]

Why You Should Choose To Be Happy In Life

Lots of people have made a choice to focus on being happy in their lives. What prevents you from trying it a yourself? Many people have wondered about it; few go beyond this, however. Not many take solid action to affect this life change. Most get off course by different reasons or most common, they make excuses and set off never really knowing what its like. Usually there are excuses such as, it's too hard or my life is too complicated. Some people also say things like you don't understand my issues or I don't even know where to begin. Ultimately they end up just choosing to be mediocre.
Were their excuses or reasons in reality valid? Had they really tried to comprehend what was involved? Did they know and realize the advantages?
Let's take a closer look. Many reasons exist for why one should focus on being happy in life. Here are the five most common reasons. Let us go through them them one by one to see which might apply:
First, its scientifically proven that the happier you are, the healthier you also are. Sure, I recognize you may object this as being true 100 percent of the time time. And you may well be right, however, look at it like this, almost all (even if not 100%) of people that focus on the good things in life live longer healthier lives. Furthermore, bear in mind that while living longer, you also enjoy things more. Even the small things.
Second, being happy is contagious. Its very attractive and will force others to want to be around you. The main reason is they see you have something special and they want to know how to get it for themselves. And also being around a happy person makes them feel better about themselves.
Third, choosing to be happy will likely make you more successful in your career. As they say you "catch more flies with honey.". Also, being happy is physically appealing to the opposite sex. Someone who is happy promotes confidence which brings me to my next point.
Fourth, confidence breeds success. Choosing a happy lifestyle is a self fulfilling prophecy.
Fifth, being happy enables you to laugh more and appreciate humor. In turn, this is beneficial because as you know, laughing is the best medicine.
Reviewing some of the above reasons in detail this way, one by one, they really generates a strong case for wanting to focus on being happy in life, don't they?
Maybe its not for you. But, look at it inside the light of the above 5 points. Seriously consider choosing to be happy in your life if enough of the value of the benefits apply to you.

Lessons in Success and Personal Growth From the Hare and the Tortoise

There are heaps of tools in the market these days providing deeper insights to our personalities, psyche, skills and strengths and how we interact and engage to best effect. Self awareness and self understanding is crucial to making the right decisions in life and getting the success we desire, from life partner to career choice and who we decide to surround ourselves with. Sometimes, though profound wisdom and learning is captured in a story and The Hare and The Tortoise by Aesop's Fable's is one of those. It captures beautifully the philosophies and secrets of success, personal growth and development.
Let's take the Hare.
Can you relate to the hare, always in a hurry to move forward to the next level, competitive and up for the challenge. We can even be in a hurry to grow up these days but success worth having takes time and effort to acquire. It is good to be up for a challenge and to have goals and aspirations to look forward to in life. There is nothing quite like winning or achieving something that is personal to you. But hare like behaviors have severe limitations. Always wanting to be ahead of the pack can be exhausting and, in looking forward, we fail to appreciate the importance of the present moment where the best opportunities and solutions appear and we lose sight of the 'why' behind our actions.
Overly competitive tendencies can alienate people when we might need support.
It is natural human nature to want to strive for more so achieving goals and enjoying the accolades and riches that come with that experience end up being only temporary as we look for the next bigger goal. It is easy to fall into the workaholic category in pursuit of our goals.
In the end it gets you because you burnout.
There are plenty of hares everywhere you look hoping to short cut and leap frog to change their life in 3 weeks, lose weight fast, eliminate debt, create a business and achieve overnight success. They want results in all areas of their life and they want it straight away. They think that if they look better they'll enjoy a better life or when they get their success they can be happy and start really living.
It doesn't always quite work like that does it?
Whilst external appearance can do wonders for our self confidence if we haven't got that belief in us deep inside of us then it's not going to truly alter how we feel and we won't feel fulfilled or satisfied for very long. It is in our nature to want to strive for more but what if we could learn to evolve in a different way and to appreciate the change that small steps bring?
There is a place for radical transformational change programmes, after all, sometimes; shock tactics can be good for kick starting our systems. But the issue is always around continuity. If you're surviving on watercress soup all week then the will power is going to fail you eventually even if you are the most disciplined person on the planet.
The same is true for growing your business, very rarely do you achieve break through success without putting in the right foundations. You plant the seed then it has to be lovingly nurtured, watered and weeded frequently to bring it to life. If you're lucky one day you'll be able to harvest it but, meanwhile, you've had a ball growing it.
As the age old saying goes success is not about doing something 100% better it's about doing everything 1% better. Constant small steps of improvement every day by eating in the right way, for example. You've got to the take the action and you've got to be persistent. That goes for perfecting the art of being what you want to become not waiting until you have something in the false belief that you'll then be seen to be that type of person.
The actions and behaviors of the tortoise have much to offer us.
He teaches us about the value of the journey as much as the destination point. His actions are more centered and less ego driven.
Sure the tortoise moves more slowly but with more purposeful action, one step at a time, moving consistently towards the end result. The tortoise knows why he's moving forward and the value of the tortoise is not about being the best you can be, though there's merit in that. The tortoise teaches us the wisdom of accepting who we really are and where we are in life because the tortoise realized he's more than good enough.
The tortoise stayed the course and got to the finish line ahead of the hare. The tortoise is peaceful and full of serenity less concerned with comparisons, and that's an inner power like nothing else.
This fable is a lesson in momentum. If you want lasting results in all areas of your life then steady wins the race every time.

How to Handle Lifes Difficulties in 500 Words Or Less

Every life is filled with difficulty. There is no way around it. The question is how to handle the situations that arise.
The deepest truths on how to handle life can be expressed in very few words. The philosophy behind the truths as well as the implementation of the truths can fill a library.
For example, you will hear it said that acceptance of whatever happens makes life easier. The concept of acceptance is taught in many traditions by many teachers and masters.
Does acceptance mean that you give up, that you must simply do nothing? No, acceptance means that you don't attempt to change the situation from what it truly is. Once you recognize the problem then you can search for the solution.
For instance, you've just been diagnosed with an illness. It isn't serious right now, but it could be if you don't take steps to change your lifestyle. If you accept that you have this disease, and if you do want to be healthy, you examine your options and implement those that will be for your best. If you deny your diagnosis you will continue on the path to deterioration.
Continuing the unhealthy path by simply saying "This is the way I am" is a sign of intellectual dishonesty as well as a lack of courage.
Many of you are familiar with what is called the Serenity Prayer: God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
"Wisdom" is about discernment. There are things you just don't have the power to change... almost anything about someone else. Then there are those things within your power to change... much of your own personal attitudes and actions. And, of course, there are those things within you that are near impossible to change... your height being one of them.
Wisdom is the discernment of knowing what you can change and what you can't change. Acceptance is coming to peace with the immovable fact or situation before you. Wisdom is realizing whether you are being honest with yourself in saying you can't alter something, or just plain lazy.
You gain wisdom by learning from your experiences. Some people do not appear to learn. Others learn very quickly. It takes rigorous honesty and the courage to face the truth about yourself and others to gain wisdom.
Your life is a balance of being proactive and of waiting for what comes. There are times when you will feel the deep urge to be proactive. Follow the urge. If following the urge results in what you would call disaster, then stop and wait. Listen. Feel. Experience.
If you feel yourself fighting the same battles repeatedly, with yourself or others, ask yourself, "Is this something that can change?" If it isn't, develop a plan to live your life with what is. If it is changeable, develop a plan and stick to it.

The 12 most-read 2011 articles in Life & Style

Covering fashion, food and drink, health and families, house and home, love and sex, history, gadgets and tech, and motoring,Independent.co.uk's Life & Style section is always full to the brim with news and features that stretch across a wide range of interests.
Therefore it's no surprise that the collection of this year's most read articles paints a balanced picture of a busy, diverse, section, and includes an amalgamation of pieces stretching across all of its sub-sections, from hard-hitting health stories and lengthy features on human psychology, to quirky bites of gadget news and amusing commentary on dieting and fitness.
The 12 most read are those Life & Style articles published in 2011 that have been visited by the greatest number of separate users to date.
The list (click the headlines to read articles in full)
With both 'porn' and 'Wikileaks' in the headline, this article was a search engine's dream. Guy Adams, The Independent's LA correspondent, reports on the anger of California's x-rated film business following the leaking of a database containing the real names, dates of birth, and official nicknames of more than 15,000 'performers'.
Illustrating the aforementioned diversity of the Life & Style section, this story by Whitehall editor Oliver Wright is far removed from Guy's tongue-in-cheek reportage above. Oliver exposes the shocking finding that two-thirds of health trusts in England are rationing treatments for 'non-urgent' conditions as part of the drive to reduce costs in the NHS by £20bn over the next four years.
3. How Google Translate works
By David Bellos, Tuesday 13 September
This extract from David Bellos' book Is That a Fish in Your Ear: Translation and the Meaning of Everything explains the way in which Google's pioneering language translator scours the web for instances where certain phrases have been used in various languages previously, in order to translate the text you input. Far from being just one for the techies, this piece raises some very interesting ideas about the nature of language and the quest for 'pure meaning'.
4. Antibiotic-resistant infections spread through EuropeBy Jeremy Laurance, Friday 18 November
A disturbing report by The Independent's health editor on the increasing resilience of the bacteria K. pneumoniae against carbapenems, the most powerful class of antibiotics. The expert warning that we are heading towards the 'unthinkable scenario of untreatable infections' seems to be taken seriously by our readers, with 128,000 viewing this article in just over one month.
Another light-hearted story from Guy Adams on the iPhone 4S, and its voice-activated, 'opinionated', personal assistant Siri, who refuses to give details of abortion clinics or directs users to Planned Parenthood clinics, much to the joy of pro-life groups, and dismay of liberals. Another late entry, having only been online since the beginning of this month.
6. Secret history of Stonehenge revealedBy David Keys, Saturday 26 November 2011
The only history article among the 12 most read, this piece by David Keys takes a look at the findings of recent research into Britain's most famous ancient site, including the revelation that it may have been a place of worship 500 years before the first stone was erected. Such propositions offer new insights into the landmark's mysterious past, and turn past archaeological theories on their heads.
7. Why a lack of empathy is the root of all evilBy Clint Witchalls, Tuesday 5 April
An intriguing feature about the theories of Simon Baron-Cohen, professor of developmental psychopathology at the University of Cambridge, who suggests that acts traditionally labelled as evil - and written off as such - can be explained in terms empathy deficit. Clint Witchalls doesn't buy straight into Baron-Cohen's arguments, however, and it is the question surrounding culpability that makes this such a compelling read.
Inspired by the summer's shots of the News Corp chairman being put through his 80-year-old paces by his personal trainer in a London park, this jovial piece by Will Dean argues that the power elite may be giving away a little more than intended when they're at their most primal. To paraphrase Will, the looks in the eyes of marathon runners are less windows into their souls than conservatories.
9. Does running make you fat?By Sophie Morris, Tuesday 11 October
Continuing a running theme, this headline is an 'hallelujah' to exercisephobes everywhere, but, sadly, the content of Sophie Morris' fantastic piece isn't so kind on the sofa-bound. Sophie highlights the importance of a healthier diet and high-impact work-outs for weight loss, banishing the myth that donning lycra and hitting the tarmac will instantly sculpt that perfect beach bod.
10. China gets hot under the collar over world's first 3D porn film
By Clifford Coonan, Wednesday 6 April
The second entry on our list with 'porn' in its headline - is this telling us something about our readers? Clifford Coonan reports on the release of Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy, the first major 3D pornographic movie, and how tour groups from mainland China were planning to make the trip across to Hong Kong to catch the opening, due to its banning in their home country. Like Guy Adams, earlier, Clifford keeps his tongue firmly held in cheek, pondering whether "viewers' 3D glasses steam up during Sex and Zen's racier moments" and "3D could be box-office Viagra for the genre".
11. 'I woke up in the wrong life'By Naomi Jacobs, Tuesday 14 June
"Where was my lower bunk bed and my pink bedspread? Why wasn't my sister sleeping soundly above me? Why couldn't I hear my parents making breakfast downstairs?" Naomi Jacobs' first-person account of transient global amnesia is as fascinating as it is terrifying, as the 34-year-old mother describes waking up one day convinced she was only 15.
A curious piece by Michael Mosley on the pioneering psychological experiment by Stanley Milgram in the 1960s, in which participants would deliver what they thought were deadly electric shocks to a stranger if ordered to do so by someone they perceived to be in authority, and the way in which such an experiment holds a mirror up to our own morality and forces to ask how far we would go if told to.

Editors' choice
While the above list shows the most read articles of 2011, we asked our editors to nominate their favourite pieces of the year.
Susie Rushton, Editor, The Independent Magazine
"My favourite feature of the year was Guy Adams's interview with Diddy. Getting him to turn up to the interview was a marathon in itself, but we we eventually got the date, he was very open about his career and personal life. I also loved the slightly awkward photographs that Stefan Ruiz shot for us of Diddy in his hotel room. A cracking cover story all round."
Laurence Earle, Executive Editor & Editor, The New Review
Béatrice Dalle: 'I am naturally quite bashful'By Robert Chalmers, Sunday 17 July
"It may not have got as many hits as 'Mystery of the Mummy's Chinese travel ban' or 'The 10 Best fountain pens' ... but I'd like to nominate Robert Chalmers' eye-boggling interview with the actress Béatrice Dalle. After all, this too was a story that had everything: Shoplifting! Nudity! Drugs! A boyfriend who punched a monkey on TV!"

313 words article on School Life

School life is very important part of one's life, because it provides opportunity for study and discipline. Besides these, the school life is a preparatory stage for entering public life.
School plays an important role in widening the outlook of students. Virtues such as perseverance, sincerity, truthfulness, tolerance, discipline and obedience developed in pupils. School provides opportunity to the students to be disciplined. They show discipline in class room, play ground, hostel, and library at other places.
School is a meeting place of students and teachers. From here, a student learns how to adjust himself with the society at later part of life.
The school life is generally a period of youth. In school, all the students read in a spirit of togetherness. They forget their joys and sorrows. They read together, play together and sit together. In these days their minds contain some youthful dreams which come true as they grow in age.
School is the right place for the fulfillment of the youthful desires. Students take part in games and sports, drama, essay competition, song and debate competitions etc. School also gives the foundation for the budding poets, scientists, writers, doctors, engineers, painters and musicians. It is in school that the students enjoy the affection of their teachers.
Teachers act as the guides and guardians to guide them on the right path. In school, teachers try to remove the evils from the students by sowing some seeds of good qualities in them.
In library, debate class and in competitions, students get proper scope to improve their knowledge and style. Above all, in examinations they try to show their brilliant performance. Thus they get opportunity to expand their activity. School has definitely a healthy influence upon students. But some students indulge in bad company and get away from the impact of their teachers. Those students miss the charm of their school life.

April 4, 2012 - We have a very alarming update and hope to have more details in just a few days. News that even has the full attention of the National Academy of Sciences along with NASA and other world scientist are quite concerned as they are not sure just what to expect, if they do, they are not talking.  Simply said... the earth will soon start to cross through the absolute center of the dark rift of the Milky Way around 12.21.12. The rift is dark because it's littered with lots of space debris that consists of stationary rocks and boulders, even asteroids, and some objects which are planet size. This "dark rift" is the galactic gravitational plane of the Milky Way which traps all of this space debris. As the Earth passes through this plane, we may very well see a meteorite storm producing thousands of rocks that come raining out of the sky with hundreds, possibly thousands of meteorites making it all the way to the ground. We will just have to see what really happens. Keep in mind that countries around the world have long since built massive deep underground survival bunkers for 2012 and beyond. See Milky Way photo above.

Additionally, solar scientist are concerned that this gravitational plane (that is the backbone to the Milky Way's dark rift) may send the sun on a rampage which sets off powerful x-class solar storms and CMEs. (coronal mass ejections)  It's these x-class storms that have the ability to generate an EMP event (electromagnetic pulse) like the one that hit the Earth in 1859. Once that happens again with today's technological world of electronics, the United States will go dark in about three minutes or less, along with the rest of the world.

Food trucks will no longer be able to supply stores with food, cell phones and computers will no longer work, and without power from the grid most factories will no longer work. Within three days or so, what food that's in your local store will be gone. Since most cars and trucks today require electronic ignition to work, most likely most vehicles will not work, however non-electric trains most likely would continue to work.

It's estimated that it will take at least six months to repair the grid. But the National Academy of Sciences estimates it will be closer to five years to repair it all. However populations in third world countries are use to growing their own food and should survive such an event much easier.
Massive Flare FROM Solar Storm

03.11.2012 - YET ANOTHER POWERFUL SOLAR STORM ERUPTED AROUND NOON EST. NEWS AGENCIES ARE NOT REPORTING ON THIS STORM AT THE TIME OF THIS NOTICE. AS YOU CAN SEE, THE FURTHER WE GET INTO 2012, THE MORE FREQUENT SOLAR STORMS ARE BECOMING. WE ARE WORKING TO RELEASE OUR SOLAR STORM GUIDE AS FAST AS POSSIBLE.
03.09.2012 - MASSIVE 6.4 X-CLASS SOLAR STORM NOW HEADED STRAIGHT FOR EARTH ONCE AGAIN. USA TODAY SAYS IT  MAY KNOCK OUT POWER, WORLD COMMUNICATIONS, NAVIGATION SYSTEMS, ETC. IMPACT IN LESS THEN EIGHT HOURS.
03.07.2012 - MASSIVE SOLAR STORM NOW HEADED STRAIGHT FOR EARTH. USA TODAY STATES IT MAY KNOCK OUT POWER, WORLD COMMUNICATIONS, NAVIGATION SYSTEMS, ETC. IMPACT IN LESS THEN EIGHT HOURS. GETS A LOT WORSE COULD CAUSE TRANSPORTATION TO BREAK DOWN.

02.15.12 - Another massive Solar Storm Slams Into Earth yet again just weeks later!  Airlines yet again are forced to reroute northern plane routes during storm.

01.22.12 - Massive Solar Storm Slams Into Earth.  Airlines forced to reroute northern plane routes during storm.

Want to know 5,000-year-old Human blood sample

As cold cases go, it does not get much colder than Ötzi the Iceman, whose body was found frozen solid in the Italian Alps 5,300 years after he died from an arrow wound.
he died from an arrow wound.

Since he was discovered by trekkers in 1991, scientists have mapped his DNA and figured out everything from what ailments he suffered from (Lyme disease and a weak heart) to the last meal he ate (venison and ibex) before he was shot in the back, probably by an enemy tribesman.

Now, using advanced nanotechnology, they have located traces of Ötzi's blood, the oldest blood sample ever retrieved. The discovery sheds new light on his death and may change the way police study blood found at modern crime scenes.
                                                                                                source:www.guardian.co.uk
"Up to now there had been uncertainty about how long blood could survive, let alone what human blood cells from the Chalcolithic period – the Copper Stone Age – might look like," said Albert Zink, of the Institute for Mummies and the Iceman in Bolzano, Italy, where Ötzi's body is kept at minus 6C.

Using an atomic microscope and a spectroscope, an Italo-German team found tiny traces of blood similar to modern-day blood around the arrow wound and a cut to Ötzi's hand.

"Forensic scientists today have trouble telling if crime scene blood is days or months old, but by studying the elasticity of 5,000-year-old blood we hope to be able to make a real contribution to the understanding of blood aging," Zink said.

The team also found fibrin, a protein involved in blood clotting, in the arrow wound. "Fibrin is produced by the body at the moment of wounding and later replaced during the healing process," Zink said. "What we found shows he died within 30 minutes of being shot."

Where's the dark matter?

Survey finds no hint of dark matter near Solar System

In the largest survey of its kind to date, astronomers scouring the space around the Solar System for signs of dark matter — the hypothetical material believed to account for more than 80% of the mass in the Universe — have come up empty-handed.

If confirmed, the surprising result would upend a long-established consensus, researchers not involved in the study say.  For decades, cosmic theories have relied on dark matter — which exerts gravitational pull but emits no light — to be the hidden scaffolding that explains how structure arose in the Universe, how galaxies formed and how the rapidly spinning Milky Way manages to keep from flying apart. Without dark matter, theorists say, the visible material in the Universe, such as stars and gas, would not have the heft to do the job alone.

“If the results stand up, it’s going to be very difficult to make them compatible with the conventional view of dark matter,” says Scott Tremaine, an astrophysicist at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, who was not involved in the study.

In their survey, Christian Moni Bidin of the University of Concepcion in Chile and his colleagues used the European Southern Observatory’s 2.2-metre telescope in La Silla and three other telescopes to weigh, in effect, an extended volume of space centred around the Sun. Although this area cannot be measured directly, the total mass within the volume can be inferred by its influence on the motions of stars that are passing through.

The researchers measured the velocity of more than 400 stars within 4,000 parsecs (13,000 light years) of the Sun in a limited volume — a 15-degree cone — below the flattened disk of the Milky Way Galaxy, and then used those observations to extrapolate the velocities of stars on the other side of the disk,

above the plane. This volume is approximately four times greater than that surveyed by other teams in previous studies.

The researchers found that at most, only about one-tenth the amount of dark matter predicted by models could exist in the volume of space they examined, Moni Bidin says.

Only if dark matter has a highly unlikely arrangement — squeezed into a shape like that of an upright rugby ball rather than a round soccer ball — could the team’s results be consistent with the dark matter that other researchers have, since the 1970s, said must exist to account for the rapid rotation of the outskirts of the Milky Way.

Moni Bidin adds that the myriad experiments designed to directly detect dark-matter particles “are doomed to fail” if the density of the invisible material is as low as he and his colleagues have found.
Agreeing to disagree

But Tremaine and others say that they won’t be convinced unless other teams, making their own observations, arrive at the same unsettling conclusion.

“I wouldn’t throw out nearby dark matter quite yet,” says Chris Flynn, an astronomer at the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, who reviewed the paper, which has been accepted by the Astrophysical Journal.  “The measurement being made is very challenging, and there are a number of ways for it to miss the dark matter even if is there.” Despite his qualms, Flynn says that he “agreed to disagree” with the authors of the study and approved the paper for publication.

Heidi Newberg, an astronomer at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, notes that the difficult measurement is dominated by the matter near the plane of the Milky Way, which, unlike the rest of the Galaxy, is expected to be made up mainly of normal matter.  That makes it more difficult to tease out whatever dark-matter component may exist in the region.

She cautions that some of the general assumptions that underlie the result, although standard, are nevertheless only approximations.  “In my opinion, many of them will turn out not to be true in detail,” she says.

As an example, Newberg notes that the researchers assumed that the group of stars they examined were smoothly distributed above and below the plane of the Milky Way. But if the distribution turns out to be lumpier, as is the case for stars in the outer parts of the galaxy, then the resulting calculations of dark matter density could be incorrect.

Flynn agrees that there are a number of ways that the method employed by Moni Bidin and his co-authors “could get it wrong.”
